Sergeant Elaine Santiago, who is assigned to the 19 Precinct in Manhattan, always wanted to be part of the NYPD.
“It was my dream to become a cop – my father was one too,” she said.
She recently has been dedicated to helping the people affected by the hurricane in Puerto Rico. Sgt. Santiago is assisting with coordinating the relief effort at the parking lot at the Resorts World Casino in Queens since it started on October 2nd. A portion of the parking lot has been set-up to take in donated supplies where NYPD officers then sort and box them. The items are then shipped out to those who need it most.
In addition to protecting and helping the people of New York City, her determination to help the people of Puerto Rico also has a personal meaning.
“I have family living all over Puerto Rico. My family, and all Puerto Ricans, are still feeling it today – I want to help get them the help they need,” she said.
In addition to helping the people of Puerto Rico, the relief effort is helping people in other locations as well, including those impacted by the earthquakes in Mexico.
