The Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation, in partnership with The Legacy Center, held a backpack drive for children in Ridgewood, Queens. With the help of local NYPD officers, hundreds of backpacks with much needed school supplies were delivered to students during a lively block party. The event featured music, a rock climbing wall, guest speakers, and eager students lining up to receive a colorful backpack. Families also had the opportunity to meet and take pictures with some of our four-legged officers from the Mounted and K9 Units.
Many officers who worked with Detective Rafael Ramos in the 84 Precinct attended the event alongside members of the 104 Precinct and many others in order to help carry on their fallen brother’s legacy of generosity, community service, and leadership. The late Detective Rafael Ramos was dedicated to serving the people of New York City both on and off duty.
As a Police Officer, he emphasized the importance of education and took a special interest in mentoring young children. In his spare time, he volunteered at the Bushwick Legacy Center and worked as a community rebuilder in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. The Rafael Ramos Foundation and NYPD cops will continue to work together to improve the relationship between community members and law enforcement officers. In preparation for the upcoming school year, the Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation will be holding a second backpack drive on September 12th.
