Police Commissioner O’Neill Inducts Two New NYPD Chaplains

NYPD representatives, community members, and loved ones gathered at One Police Plaza to celebrate Reverend Jonathan J. Recabarren and Reverend Joseph E. Franco’s appointment to the NYPD Chaplains Unit. Police Commissioner O’Neill presided over the celebratory event and thanked the reverends for their dedication to the Department. The newly inducted chaplains will be called upon to provide spiritual assistance, moral guidance, and confidential counseling to members of the NYPD.

The Chaplains Unit now has 10 chaplains representing different religions and serving members of all faiths. Reverend Jonathan J. Recabarren is a Lutheran pastor at the Fordham Evangelical Lutheran Church and is a native Spanish speaker. He comes highly recommended by Chief Larry Nikunen and Inspector Philip Rivera of the 46 Precinct. Reverend Joseph E. Franco is the Roman Catholic pastor of Sacred Heart & St. Francis of Assisi Church in the Bronx. He has deep ties with his congregation and also serves as a chaplain to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Congratulations to our new chaplains and thank you for being the spiritual backbone of the NYPD.
