Observant Police Officers Arrest Mailbox Fisher

“After we arrested the suspect we found the makeshift tool he was using to steal the mail, it was sticking out of the mailbox,” said Sergeant Marino.

Police officers in the Bronx arrested a “Mailbox Fisher” and recovered thousands of dollars worth of checks stolen from people’s mail. On Monday, February 1 at approximately 5:15 a.m. Sergeant Marino and Police Officer Dalia of the 43 Precinct responded to the front of an Apple Bank on Hugh J. Grant Circle after a passerby alerted them about someone tampering with a mailbox. The police officers stopped a man fitting the description and he was in possession of a large amount of mail that did not belong to him. Among the pieces of mail recovered were mortgage payment checks for many thousands of dollars. The 20-year-old man was placed under arrest and charged with Grand Larceny and Criminal Tampering.
