St. John’s, WFAN’s Boomer & Carton to Host Joe Lemm Memorial Celebrity Game

St. John’s and Boomer & Carton will host the Joe Lemm Memorial Celebrity Basketball Game on Friday, May 6, at Carnesecca Arena beginning at 7 p.m. to show appreciation for the NYPD and honor its fallen officer. Red Storm Head Coach Chris Mullin has teamed up with WFAN morning hosts Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton to put on a star-studded event with all proceeds benefitting the Lemm family.

“It is important that we pay tribute to the people who protect both our city and our country,” said Mullin. “We are going to celebrate Joe Lemm’s bravery, selflessness and dedication to keeping others safe, and will honor his legacy by playing a game he also enjoyed.”

Detective Joseph Lemm was a 15-year veteran of the NYPD, starting out in the 48th precinct, and spent the past five years working on the Bronx Warrant Squad. He earned the nickname “Superman” by his fellow cops during his decorated career that included 427 arrests.

A technical sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, Lemm and five other service members in his patrol were killed four days before Christmas in Afghanistan by a suicide bomber. His wife, Christine, daughter, Brooke, who will perform the national anthem and son, Ryan, survive him.

“On behalf of St. John’s University and our basketball program, our thoughts and prayers are with the Lemm family and all of the men and women who proudly serve this country,” said Mullin.

Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Mitch Richmond, a special assistant on the St. John’s men’s basketball staff, and Red Storm women’s basketball coach Joe Tartamella will also to take part in this special tribute to a local hero.

Among the other celebrities hitting the hardwood include St. John’s alumnus and New York Mets Hall of Fame pitcher John Franco, former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach and Super Bowl champion Bill Cowher, International Tennis Hall of Famer and former World’s No. 1 player John McEnroe, award-winning actor/comedian Michael Rapaport and many more.

Tickets to the Joe Lemm Memorial Celebrity Basketball game are on sale now at Lower level tickets are $20 and upper level tickets are $15 with all proceeds benefitting the Joseph G. Lemm Memorial Fund.
