(NYPost.com)- A 23-year Army veteran recently began a new chapter as a freshly minted NYPD police officer — and said he’s honored to wear the same shield number as the long-time cop who inspired him to join the ranks.

Rookie Donovan Bunch, 43, was assigned shield number 25731 when he graduated from the police academy earlier this year — the same number worn by friend and mentor Deputy Inspector Justin Lenz when he was a new cop.

“We’ve been friends for a long time, and carrying on the shield n

umber, I related it to everything he had told me about his career,” said Bunch, a Mississippi native who speaks with a heavy southern drawl and works in Harlem’s 25th Precinct.

“It was just an honor for me to wear it on my chest.”
