Proactive Police Work Keeps NYC Safe As Most Are Sleep

NYPD Transit officers recovered two illegal handguns and arrested two men after observing them jump the turnstile in separate incidents in Brooklyn and Manhattan

Police Officers Thornton and Simon were on patrol at the East 59th Street and Lexington Avenue subway station in Manhattan early Sunday morning where they observed a man jump the turnstile, failing to pay the fare. The two officers approached the man on the northbound number 4 train platform and performed a warrant check over the police radio. It was determined that the suspect was a transit recidivist and not eligible for a summons. The suspect was taken into custody and a search revealed a loaded .380 Walther model PP 7.65 mm semi-automatic handgun. The 32-year-old man from the Bronx was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Theft of Service and Criminal Trespassing.

Sergeant Rosado and Police Officer Zummo were patrolling the Nostrand Avenue subway station early Saturday morning where they observed a man jump the turnstile, failing to pay the fare. The two officers stopped the suspect and performed a warrant check over the police radio. It was determined that the suspect was a transit recidivist and did not qualify to receive a summons. The suspect was taken into custody and search revealed a loaded silver Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum revolver, containing four rounds.  The 40-year-old Bronx man was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Theft of Service.
