NYPD Solves Murder of Brooklyn Man, Bringing Peace to Grief-Stricken Mom

Kelly Simpkins, 41, was at work as a New York Housing Authority caretaker when she got the call last Nov. 21, a week before Thanksgiving, that her son, Michael Hayden, 20, had been senselessly murdered in broad daylight on a sidewalk in East New York, Brooklyn.

“Michael’s father, Michael Sr., and I have never given up hope for justice. But I want to say right here: God bless NYPD. Bless the homicide detectives who worked my son’s case. The first detective was great, but he retired. Then Detective Handley took over no more than a month ago. He said to me, ‘I promise that I am going to solve your son’s murder.’ And by God, a month later he kept his word.”
